The Arizona Wildcats were a down-and-out program just a few years ago. Now they are harboring hopes to compete for a national championship, going into the final week of the season.

That isn’t so far-fetched. Arizona is the #8 team in the country, according to the latest Playoff Rankings, and there are at least a few teams ahead of them who could be in very tough in conference championship games or other matchups, which means if everything breaks right, they could conceivably find themselves in the top four, especially if they can win against the #2 team in the rankings.

Is it possible that the Wildcats actually have the Oregon Ducks’ number? To some BetAnySports customers, that would appear to be the case, as ‘Zona is the team that has dealt the Ducks their last two defeats. In last year’s game it was actually kind of easy, as the Wildcats dominated things on the way to a 42-16 victory.

This year it was a little tighter, as Arizona took a 31-24 decision that was highlighted, at least on their part, by a strip-sack of Heisman Trophy candidate Marcus Mariota on the final drive of the game. At that point it looked as if the Oregon quarterback’s Heisman hopes might be dashed a bit, but he has come back strong, as have the Ducks in general, as they have rolled to seven straight victories, with a 6-0-1 record against the college football betting odds over that time. All of the wins have been by double digits, and BetAnySports patrons know they haven’t beaten stiffs either, with three of the opponents (Stanford, UCLA, Utah) going into the games nationally-ranked.

And with 36 touchdown passes and only two interceptions, Mariota has firmly positioned himself as the Heisman front-runner. And Oregon seemed to be in better shape on the offensive line than it was in the earlier loss to Arizona, at least until it was revealed that center Hroniss Grasu would be out of action with an injury to his lower leg.

The Wildcats have had a lot of success moving the football against the Duck defense in the last two meetings, piling up 58 first downs, 73 points and 512 rushing yards. This spread attack, designed by coach Rich Rodriguez, is tough to deal with, especially when there is somebody strong at the trigger. And redshirt freshman Anu Solomon has been outstanding (27 TD passes, just seven interceptions). Without him, this team might sputter. But with him, they have scored 42 points against both Utah and Arizona State in back-to-back wins.

There is no real home field advantage here, as the game is being played at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, the first-year home of the San Francisco 49ers, where there were some serious issues with the playing surface before opening day, which have, we imagine, been completely ironed out by now.
