College Football Betting — Nebraska Wants No Close Call Against Fresno State

College Football Betting Nebraska Fresno State 2014

The Fresno State Bulldogs knew that they might struggle this season on offense, because Derek Carr, their quarterback who had registered such outstanding numbers, went off to the NFL. But there is also nothing they have been able to do about stopping the opponent, and that may be their biggest problem as they go into Saturday night’s home e game against the Nebraska Cornhuskers, who were spooked by a near-upset last week that would have been something of epic proportions. College football betting action at BetAnySports is set for 10 PM ET at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno.

If you recall last season, Fresno State won its first ten games before falling 62-52 at the hands of San Jose State and David Fales, then won the Mountain West conference title, which got them into the Las Vegas Bowl, where they were blasted by Southern Cal. That was really their only “power” opponent of the season. In a sense, they have been exposed by such foes early in the 2014 campaign.

Nebraska, on paper, was not supposed to have been tested by now. They indeed blew out Florida Atlantic in their opener, as Bo Pelini got some revenge over the school that fired his brother as head coach last season (under rather bizarre circumstances). But against McNeese State, they were in a tie with the clock running out in regulation, and got bailed out with a sensational catch-and-run by Ameer Abdullah.

In the college football betting odds that have been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Huskers are double-digit favorites:

Fresno went up against a Utah squad last week that may yet make a lot of noise in the Pac-12, and they were able to move the ball a little through the air (283 yards), but got nothing going on the ground (55 net yards) and lost by 32 (59-27). It was scary what happened to their defense in the first week, as USC – which is improved under Steve Sarkisian – trampled them, racking up 37 first downs, over 700 yards and 52 points. The Trojans wore out the Bulldogs, running 92 plays.

BetAnySports customers have been watching the quarterback situation at FSU closely. Brandon Connette, the Duke transfer who threw three interceptions in the USC game, injured his right hand last week, and there was considerable question as to whether he would be ready for this one. He practiced, but coach Tim DeRuyter reportedly doesn’t think he has been able to do enough work with the starters, and so junior Brian Burrell, who has completed 19 of 35 passes, will probably get the start.

As college football bettors know, Fresno’s big defensive challenge here obviously involves slowing down the Nebraska running game, which is currently ranked sixth in the nation (346.5 ypg). The star is Abdullah, who has 286 yards in the two games combined, but he can get some relief as well from Terrell Newby (6.4 ypc). Tommy Armstrong Jr. is still not a reliable thrower (only 51.7%), but he is going to be a threat to run with the football.
