College Football – Ohio State Slightly Favored Over Clemson in Orange Bowl

The Ohio State Buckeyes saw their hopes for an undefeated season go out the window in the Big Ten championship game, and so now the best they can hope for is to be ranked third or fourth in the polls when the season comes to an end. As college football bettors know, the Clemson Tigers have failed in their two opportunities against top-flight competition, so they have something to prove your as well. The Orange Bowl, taking place at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL, kicks off at 8:30 PM ET.

Both of these teams ended their season with losses. Ohio State was beaten 34-24 by Michigan State, which went on to win the Rose Bowl over Stanford. Clemson lost by two touchdowns to South Carolina, which couldn’t get into the BCS because of rules that restricted the SEC to having just two teams, and they also were slapped around 51-14 by Florida State.

In the college football odds that have been posted on this game at BetAnySports, Ohio State is a slight favorite:

Braxton Miller, who would seem to be an ideal “fit” for Urban Meyer’s spread option system, was touted as a Heisman candidate at the start of the season, but he was slowed a little bit by injuries and fell somewhat short of expectations. Miller still has to be counted as a dangerous person, whether it’s running the ball or throwing it, but the general consensus among college football bettors is that he is going to have to improve upon his performance in the final two games of the season, as he completed only 14 of his 26 attempts.

However, Miller thrived when running the ball out of the spread, tallying 623 yards on the ground in the last four games. In a way, you can say that Ohio State might be fortunate to be here in the first place, even though they went into that conference championship game undefeated. In the blood rivalry game against Michigan, they were holding onto a 42-41 lead with time running out, and the Wolverines could have kicked an extra point to send the game into overtime. Instead, coach Brady Hoke decided to go for a two-point conversion, which failed. As a result of these last two games, there are many BetAnySports customers who look upon the Buckeyes as being perhaps an overrated team. They have not done very well against the football pointspread lately, having dropped their last four decisions ATS.

Clemson, as mentioned, fell way short in its two biggest tests. And what the Georgia Bulldogs did this season makes their opening-game win over them seem much less significant. However, you absolutely have to respect what this offense can do. Tajh Boyd, the Tigers’ quarterback, may indeed be a first-round NFL draft pick. He threw for 29 touchdowns this season, although college football odds bettors need to take note that four of his nine Interceptions took place in the games against Florida State and South Carolina. Boyd’s main target is junior wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who caught 85 passes and is a threat to go coast-to-coast anytime he touches the ball. The speed on this Clemson team that might wind up being a little intimidating for Ohio State’s defense, and Meyer’s stop unit may find it to be a unique experience in that it will have to cover virtually every inch of the field.
