The Dallas Cowboys vow to keep fighting until they are mathematically eliminated from contention in the NFC East. And it doesn’t have to be the “new math” that gives them a chance either. The ‘Pokes can actually pull to within a game of the division lead with a victory here, as the Monday night action kicks off at 8:30 PM ET at FedEx Field. At 3-8, the Cowboys are currently two games behind the Washington Redskins and a game and a half in back of Philadelphia and the New York Giants. And what is interesting is not only that they have won only one game since early September, but that they have gone 0-7 without Tony Romo starting (1-6 ATS, for those of you who need to know – wink, wink). So that takes us through a couple of quarterbacks – Brandon Weeden, who actually completed 72% of his passes before being benched, and Matt Cassel, picked up from the Bills as a veteran stopgap, who is currently the guy who is pressed into service, as Romo re-injured the collarbone he broke in the season’s second week. To be frank, the Cowboys were not on their way to a win with Romo at the helm on Thanksgiving, as he was picked off three times, including a “pick-six,” in the 33-14 loss to the still-undefeated Carolina Panthers. But the brass, including the most important guy of all – Jerry Jones – felt they could run the table, or close to it, if Romo was able to stay healthy.
Cassel has a ratio of five TD’s to five INT’s, and that is pretty much the story of his middling career. BetAnySports patrons know that in this division, “middling” might get you to the post-season. But that is anything BUT what Kirk Cousins has been when he has played at home. The Washington signal-caller has completed almost 75% of his passes with eleven TD’s and two interceptions at FedEx Field, and that is one reason this team is 5-1 there. yes, he has had support from the ground attack (142 rush yards/game at home), and those guys have not been too nifty lately. But there are two capable guys back there – Alfred Morris and Matt Jones – and perhaps they have yet to do their best running.
One of the bugaboos for Cousins has been a tendency to get erratic and commit turnovers in bunches. And so maybe it is fortuitous that he finds himself up against a team that carried the worst turnover ratio in the NFL (minus-12) into this week’s proceedings. While Cassel can’t necessarily make an ideal connection with Dez Bryant (just 12.2 yards per reception), Cousins’ downfield efforts can be greatly aided by the presence of DeSean Jackson, who had a stunning 63-yard TD catch against the Giants last week. Yes, some of what the Redskins have made work in the games they’ve won can work here.
