Football Betting at BetAnySports — Hoyer Takes Over as Browns Host Rams

Cleveland Browns 2014 Football Betting at BetAnySports

The Cleveland Browns like to think they have put an end to their quarterback controversy, at least for the time being. They are settled on a starting quarterback for their season opener, and he will get the call at FirstEnergy Stadium as the Brown take the field against the St. Louis Rams in football betting action that is slated to get underway at 8 PM ET.

Last Monday the Browns got very little going offensively while Brian Hoyer or Johnny Manziel were in the ballgame. In fact, it took rookie Connor Shaw to being them on a drive for the score that could have tied it up against Washington, if Cleveland had elected to kick an extra point. But since it’s kind of impolite to take a game into overtime in the pre-season, they went for a two-point conversion and failed.

First-year Cleveland head coach Mike Pettine was determined to make a decision by Tuesday as to who his starter was going to be. Well, he didn’t have every much to go on. But on Wednesday he pulled the trigger and named Hoyer the starter. That’s the way it will be as the Brownies go into their regular season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In the football betting odds that have been posted by the people at BetAnySports, the Browns are the favorites at home:

It would have been one thing if Hoyer had done something outstanding to seize control of the job. But he hasn’t really moved the offense at all. Against the Redskins, he completed just two passes for 16 yards. Manziel came in and was two-of-seven for 29 yards and couldn’t get any protection at all. Cleveland simply looks horrible. And Pettine looked kind of frustrated at the post-game press conference as he said that he wasn’t in a position to make a decision yet.

By the next day, he had named Hoyer. Maybe he saw something on the film. But BetAnySports customers, as well as Browns fans, were left wondering why they could not wait another game. What Pettine wants, apparently, is to get Hoyer a lot of time with the first unit, because his intention was that Hoyer, who looked impressive at times after taking over from Brandon Weeden last season, would start the campaign as the QB while Johnny Football sat and learned something.

Cleveland rooters, who haven’t seen anyone clearly beat out Manziel, aren’t happy. And Pettine appeased them by stating that he wouldn’t throw the idea of a special package for Manziel out the window. Football bettors know that he will eventually be given the opportunity to be the starter. The question is, who will still be around to be the backup when that happens?

Rex Grossman is also in camp, but despite the fact that he has taken a team to the Super Bowl already (the Chicago Bears) and knows the offense, since he has played under coordinator Kyle Shanahan, he is not getting much consideration from his coach. Maybe this thing is going to change a couple of times before all is said and done. Maybe Hoyer is still in a position where he has to prove himself in the pre-season. Maybe Cleveland will go through another season without consistent quarterback play. Does any of this sound familiar?
