NFL Betting: Three Things We Have Learned About The NFC East So Far

Once among the deepest and most competitive divisions in the NFL, the NFC East has a much different look to it early on this year as not a single team has a winning record through the first five weeks. The Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles are tied for the NFC East lead at 2-3, with the Washington Redskins and New York Giants owning just one win between them. The NFC East is certainly not nearly as good as most fans thought it would be, but that isn’t all that we have learned about this division. Notable Lesson #1: The Giants Are Much Further Away Than Anyone Thought

Monte Kiffin
One of the biggest surprises of the year has been the awful play of the Giants, which are one of four NFL teams that are still winless heading in to week six of the NFL season. A season that began with the hope that New York could play in the Super Bowl it will host this February has taken a straight nosedive, and that dream really has ended almost before it began. The Giants are allowing an average of 36.4 point per game – easily the worst in the NFL, and the offense hasn’t been much better with Eli Manning already at a league-high 12 interceptions. Everything that could have gone wrong for New York has through the first five weeks, and what is clear is that the Giants are much further away from contending than anyone thought.

Notable Lesson #2: RGIII Is Human After All

The Redskins have won a game, but they aren’t much further ahead of the Giants in terms of the outlook for this season. Robert Griffin III missed the entire preseason, and it really affected his play when he returned to the field for week one. Griffin is still cautious about his knee despite saying that he is at full strength, and that has to do with the mental side of the injury and getting back to full speed. Washington is 1-3 and will have a tough time climbing out of that early hole, and it’s clear now that RGIII is human after all.

Notable Lesson #3: Cowboys Could Finally Win Division Title

With the Giants out of it, the Redskins struggling, and the Eagles still trying to figure out how to play defense, the NFC East is wide open for Dallas to take this year. The Cowboys have plenty of weapons on both sides of the ball including an offense that seems to finally be figuring it out with Tony Romo under center and a defense that will continue to improve under new coordinator Monte Kiffin. Dallas is just 2-3 at this point, but the division is wide open and they certainly have the weapons to capture that elusive NFC East title this year if they can finally put it all together.
