Pro Football Betting – Eagles Favored Over Cowboys in NFC East Title Game

2013 Dallas Cowboys

Some people may have scoffed at the idea of Chip Kelly bringing his hurry-up offense to the National Football League. But his Philadelphia Eagles find themselves on the verge of the playoffs. All they have to do on Sunday night is defeat a Dallas Cowboys squad that is missing its starting quarterback. Tony Romo is out, and he’ll be replaced by Kyle Orton as the Cowboys play host to the Eagles in pro football betting action that is set to begin at 8:30 PM ET at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

The Eagles couldn’t be coming into this game with more momentum, as they just trounced the Chicago Bears in last week’s Sunday night contest, doubling Chicago’s yardage total in a 54-11 victory. The Cowboys who blew a 23-point halftime lead against Green Bay two weeks ago, struggled to a one-point win over Washington last week to keep their hopes alive. They’ve got an 8-7 record, which puts them one game behind Philadelphia, but they do have the tie-breaker advantage in this one.

In the pro football betting odds that have been posted at BetAnySports, the Eagles are the road favorite:

Philadelphia Eagles -7 (-115)
Dallas Cowboys +7 (-105)

Over 53.5 points -110
Under 53.5 points -110

Nick Foles is the man who pulls the trigger for the Eagles’ offense. He’s thrown for 25 touchdowns on the season, and has been intercepted only twice. He has won the job from Michael Vick, even though Vick came back healthy after an injury. The only horrid performance for foals this season was against this Dallas team, in a game where he completed only 11 of 29 passes and was knocked out with a concussion. Rookie Matt Barkley came on in relief and threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter, as Dallas won 17-3. So if Dallas wins this game, they are in the playoffs as the NFC East champion.

As pro football bettors know, if the Cowboys (+245 on the money line at BetAnySports) are going to win this game, they’ll have to do it without Romo. After last week’s game against the Redskins, it was determined that he had a herniated disk, and although the team tried to treat it, it was unsuccessful, and he had to undergo surgery late in the week. Among backup quarterbacks in the NFL, Orton is one of the most experienced, having been the starter in both Denver and Chicago, even through he hasn’t started a game since the 2011 season. Orton knows how to handle a wide open offense; in fact, he threw for 3802 yards in 2009 with the Broncos. Owner Jerry Jones has expressed confidence in Orton, remarking that they signed him to a three-year contract for $9 million so that he would be ready for situations like this.

With all of the speculation about head coach Jason Garrett, there is been further speculation that the injury to Romo may actually give him a reprieve if the team loses tonight and finishes the season at 8-8. That may or may not be true; Jones has expressed confidence in Garrett, and has said that he would be back with the Cowboys next season. Right now there is a game to be played, and it’s a game that could be winnable, if the Cowboys can, in any way, keep the league’s leading rusher, LeSean McCoy (1476 yards), in relative check.
