Yes, there are a pair of contenders in action on Thursday night, as unbelievable as that may sound. The Jags are just a game behind the 4-5 Indianapolis Colts, while the Titans are at 2-7, just two game back. So it would behoove one of these teams to sweep the seasons series in their pursuit of the AFC South crown, and we say that because they meet again in two weeks.

As you may know, the Titans had to go a couple of weeks with Zach Mettenberger at quarterback, as Marcus Mariota was nursing a shoulder injury. But the Heisman Trophy winner came back strong with four TD passes in an upset at New Orleans. And hey, a lot of teams can’t move it against the Carolina Panthers, so let’s not hold that against them too much.

What BetAnySports customers may want to know about Mariota is that he hasn’t adapted all that badly to the NFL. Sure, there are going to be growing pains. But you can ask Jacksonville quarterback Blake Bortles whether he wouldn’t have liked to have Mariota’s numbers during his rookie year – 65% completions, a 13-6 ratio of touchdowns to interceptions, and an outstanding eight yards per attempt. Plus, the kid has poise; he doesn’t panic.

Bortles has made some strides too, although he has to be considered a little more of a gunslinger. Bortles has put the ball up 356 times, but he really should be getting more balance out of his offense. He has a thoroughbred rookie at running back in TJ Yeldon (531 yards), who we haven’t seen the best of yet. Tennessee’s ground attack is a little more uncertain, and the Jags have played up front like a team that wants to create uncertainty; their 3.3 yards allowed per carry is the best figure in the NFL.

Maybe there is a bit of a back story here with the coaching situation. BetAnySports online NFL betting patrons know that the Titans made the move to get rid of Ken Whisenhunt after a 1-6 start and replace him with Mike Mularkey, who was very unceremoniously dismissed after just one year as the Jaguars’ head coach in 2012. By the way, it deserve mention that one of the complaints against Whisenhunt (who had previously taken the Arizona Cardinals to the Super Bowl) was that he wasn’t protecting the quarterbacks. And Mariota has suffered only two sacks since Mularkey took over.

Jacksonville has to be able to take advantage of its opponents’ mistakes a little better; the Jags got four turnovers from Baltimore in the second half last week and got only nine points out of it. In other words, it should not have come down to that final untimed down after Elvis Dumervil grabbed Bortles’ face mask. Well, actually maybe the Jags did take advantage of mistakes, because the NFL acknowledged that the officials were in error for not calling a penalty against Jacksonville on the final “timed” play, which should have ended the game.
