The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are coming off a bye week, and for their sake, hopefully they worked a lot on defense. Tampa Bay is giving up an average of 27 points per game, although on the encouraging side, they have matched their win total from 2014. Speaking of that, the Washington Redskins are looking for a certain degree of payback, as they fell flat on their face and provided Tampa Bay with one of its two victories last season, dropping a 27-7 decision at FedEx Field, the site of today’s contest.

The Redskins are not coming off a particularly good outing, as they lost by two touchdowns in the New York Jets. Actually they played very well in the first half, leading the ballgame 13-10, but then they blew up over the final 30 minutes. All told, they gained only 225 yards from scrimmage against the stout New York defense, including only 34 on the ground. When Washington cannot advance the football over land, they are in big trouble, as BetAnySports customers are well aware.

The Redskins should have more room to maneuver here, but obviously Kirk Cousins is very limited. Sure, he has completed 66% of his passes, but he has averaged only 6.2 yards per attempt. The running game will have to deliver for Washington; Matt Jones is playing this week, and the idea is that he will, at the very least, be the third down option in case Chris Thompson cannot play. But with Alfred Morris also in the backfield, there is the potential for some depth back there, and this offense cannot be built around Cousins’ passing alone.

What’s interesting about the Bucs’ defense is that they rank ninth in the NFL in yards allowed per drive, but just 28th in points allowed per drive. They have allowed 13 touchdown passes on the season. Meanwhile, rookie James Winston is coming up sevens – he averages 7.7 yards per attempt, with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. He must have thrilled the coaching staff – not to mention BetAnySports patrons who laid their money down on Tampa Bay – as he produced a game without turnovers in the 30-31 overtime victory over Jacksonville two weeks ago.

Washington has played a couple of solid games at home this season, beating St. Louis and Philadelphia as underdogs. They have shown some fortitude on the defensive side, but they’ve also suffered some attrition. Quarterbacks Chris Gulliver and DeAngelo Hall are missing, as is, apparently, their rushing defense, which has allowed 4.6 yards per pop. Inasmuch as Doug Martin is really starting to “feel it” for Tampa Bay right now, that’s bad timing. Martin is had back-to-back 100 yard games that have propelled him into the league’s top 10 as far as rushing yards is concerned.

Take note that Washington has been outscored by a hefty 46-3 margin in the third quarter this year, and that they are just 3-6 ATS in their last nine games as a favorite.
