College Football Betting — Georgia Takes Dead Aim at Revenge Against Clemson

There are some people out there who believe the Clemson Tigers (+1400 to win the ACC as posted at BetAnySports) have lost much of their explosiveness, and indeed they have lost the best quarterback and wide receiver they’ve had in recent memory. On Saturday they will pay a visit to Athens as they take on the Georgia Bulldogs in college football betting action that is slated to begin at 5:30 PM ET at Sanford Stadium.

So what are the Tigers going to do without departed quarterback Tajh Boyd? Well, they have a couple of possibilities, and both of them may see action in this contest. As for wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who went to the Buffalo Bills in the first round, it is going to be difficult to replace his big-play ability.

Georgia lost its quarterback as well, but they have a veteran to step in and take his place. The big questions come on the defensive side of the ball, where they have to get something out of a unit that gave up more points than at any time in the program’s history.

Last year’s game went back and forth, and Clemson came out of it with a 38-35 victory, so Georgia has an opportunity to get some revenge at home. In the college football betting lines that have been established by the folks at BetAnySports, the Bulldogs are the solid favorites:

Clemson Tigers +7.5

Under 54 Points -110

The tenure of Boyd at Clemson will never be forgotten, because he was able to do so much, both with his ability to pass and run with the football. But coach Dabo Swinney has a couple of ways to go with his situation at quarterback. Cole Stoudt, whose dad Cliff played in the NFL, is the starter as we head into this opener, and Swinney has the luxury of being able plug in Deshaun Watson, who supplies something in the way of mobility.

BetAnySports customers don’t have to have a lot of anxiety about how Georgia is going to replace Aaron Murray under center. That’s because Hutson Mason, a senior, has spent a lot of time in this system. He threw 110 passes last season. His play action should work, with perhaps the top backfield in the nation, when you consider the abilities of Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall. Gurley could actually be a Heisman contender if he stays healthy for the entire season and the Bulldogs wind up being a conference title contender.

What could hold them back? Well, the defense, which allowed opponents to score 377 points last season. needs to get its act together. But nine starters are back on the stop unit for coach Mark Richt and brand-new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, who is looking to blitz a lot. It may not be too easy to rattle Stoudt, who in limited duty last season completed 47 of 59 passes. College football bettors certainly know that the secondary needs a lot of work.
