This game is being played at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos, a 30,000-seat venue that is generally not all that well-attended. After all, this is the Sun Belt. But the question is how well Georgia Southern will travel and play on the artificial turf. The Eagles are incredibly disciplined, and they run the option as well as anyone in the country.

In fact, for those BetAnySports customers who haven’t seen them, this team is operating at such a level of precision that it is the only team in Division I ball (they are in the “transitional” period at the moment) that is averaging 400 yards on the ground. Georgia Southern also leads the nation in yards per carry (7.3) and rushing TD’s (46). They are rampaging through the Sun Belt. And the only two losses they have could have been different, as they led the game in the last minute against both North Carolina State (one point) and Georgia Tech (four points).

Matt Breida leads this offense with 1104 rushing yards, and he is averaging an astronomical 8.9 yards per carry. There are two other members of the Georgia Southern backfield averaging nine yards a pop. No, they are not passing it (Quarterback Ellison, who has run for 883 yards, has only 88 pass attempts), but they really don’t need to. And they have turned it over just nine times, which is very impressive with all of that ball-handling.

There has been an official determination on the part of the college playoff committee that not only can Georgia Southern (currently not bowl eligible because of their transitional status) conceivably qualify for a bowl and a ranking, they could wind up going to the Fiesta, Cotton or Peach bowl as the top representative of the smaller conferences. The catch is that fewer than 76 teams have to be otherwise bowl eligible. College football bettors know that the Eagles can help their cause by extending margins against opponents. Texas State, which is coached by Dennis Franchione, formerly the head man at TCU and UNLV, faced the option attack of Navy earlier in the season, giving up 352 rushing yards in a 35-21 defeat.
