Obviously the questions surrounding this game involved whether Drew Brees was going to be able to make the start, as he has been having rotator cuff problems that make it difficult to throw. He went to see a specialist early in the week, and then participated in practice for a few days, although admittedly he was limited. But he is probable for this one.

In his absence, Luke McCown didn’t do too badly, and the Saints gave Carolina hell for a while before finally dropping a 27-22 decision. But getting close is no more than cold comfort for this club that is now 0-3. And the only consolation at this point is that they face a Dallas Cowboys team that is in a worse situation as far as their quarterback is concerned.

Actually, as BetAnySports customers saw, the Cowboys started out rather auspiciously against the Atlanta Falcons last week, scoring the first two touchdowns of the game. But they were held scoreless in the second half, as presumably Atlanta made the necessary adjustments. And the Cowboys found it impossible to deal with Julio Jones and his 164 yards receiving.

The Saints don’t have that kind of home run threat; Brees throws very short passes and hopes that his receivers can do something with the ball. At some point the Saints must have started to wonder whether it was a gigantic mistake letting Jimmy Graham go, as they did to the Seattle Seahawks. But what’s done is done.

And the same can be said for Tony Romo’s injury. It remains to be seen how long the Cowboys will continue to stick with Brandon Weeden if it doesn’t produce victories. Remember that they signed veteran Matt Cassel early last week, and he wouldn’t be a bad alternative. Weeden’s numbers weren’t bad at all, from an accuracy standpoint, against the Falcons, as he completed 22 of 26 passes and did not suffer a sack. But as BetAnySports patrons who backed the Cowboys painfully witnessed, he didn’t have “Plan B” in the second half.

Weeden has now lost the last nine games he has started in the NFL. Seven of those came while he was with the Cleveland Browns, but the “weapons” he has at his disposal in Dallas may not be much better right now. Joseph Randle started out like a house afire last week, with 92 rushing yards in the first half, but wound up with just 87 for the game. How do you do that? By LOSING yardage in the second half. Lance Dunbar, a running back, is the leading receiver at the moment, with 21 receptions for 215 yards. To paraphrase what Rick Pitino once said, Drew Pearson isn’t walking through that door. Dez Bryant isn’t either, at least for a couple of months.

There’s hope, though – New Orleans has dropped its last six games, both straight-up and against the football pointspread, in the Superdome, a place where they were dominant not so long ago.
