It was only about three and a half weeks ago that the Dolphins had been declared dead, off a disastrous trip to London that led to the firing of head coach Joe Philbin, who never came across as someone who had enough intensity for his role. Owner Steve Ross hired Dan Campbell, not a coordinator but the tight ends coach, to be the interim successor, and immediately Campbell set about to salvage the season by bringing a lot more urgency to the situation, particularly in practice, where he even put the dreaded Oklahoma drill into play.

Some strongly criticized the hiring of an unknown, but Campbell has brought energy to the atmosphere that the Dolphins have blown away their first two opponents under his direction – 38-10 over Tennessee and 44-26 over Houston (after leading 41-0 at the half). They had one sack in the first four games, and people like Ndumokong Suh had tuned out defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle. Now they have ten sacks in the last two games, and everyone is playing close attention now that Coyle is out the door and the defensive playbook has been streamlined a little.

But BetAnySports patrons know that they may have to have a few defensive tricks up their sleeve to deal with the very potent offense they are going to have in front of them. Right now the Patriots are on a pace to have the third-highest point total in NFL history, and that doesn’t come by accident.

Tom Brady never threw it down the field quite the way Peyton Manning did, but he is probably a little more well-preserved at the age of 38. For example, he’s thrown 16 touchdowns while being intercepted once. And of course, there’s no letup at all in Rob Gronkowski, who for whatever reason seems to find himself roaming all by himself at least once or twice in every ballgame. The All-Pro tight end has averaged 15.7 yards on his 34 receptions.

That’s quite a bit for Miami to handle; much more than the rather limited attacks they have faced with the Titans and Texans.

Yet many of us “experts” (not to mention a considerable portion of the BetAnySports audience, no doubt) went into this season touting the Miami defensive front as one of the best in football, especially with the arrival of Suh, and maybe, just maybe, with the infusion of Campbell’s mentality and the ouster of Coyle, who was not particularly well-respected in camp, that unit may be getting closer to fulfilling its potential. Cameron Wake has gone wild over these last two games, with six sacks (four of them in the second quarter alone against Tennessee).

One key might be who can win the battle of field position. Ryan Tannehill just set an NFL record with 25 consecutive completions, but the running game has undergone a shocking transformation. It was really dormant, but Lamar Miller has put 288 yards on the stat sheet over the last two contests. Continued effort like that should help Miami boost its third down conversion rate of 28.6%, although it doesn’t compare to that of the Pats, who are at a sizzling 50.7% and have gained more yards per drive than any other team in the league.
