NCAA Football Odds — Auburn Looking For the Top as it Visits Mississippi State

Isn’t it interesting that in another year, and a new format, in which the college football national championship will be decided with a four-team playoff, that the top two teams in the country are once again Florida State and Auburn? The Tigers got oh so close to extending the SEC’s winning streak in the BCS last season, and this year they are showing signs that they might be able to take it that extra step. Currently they are rated second in the country in both major polls, and they will be taking on a team that can be considered an “insurgent” in the Southeastern Conference, as they visit the Mississippi State Bulldogs, who are underdogs in the NCAA football odds at home, in a game that will begin at 3:30 PM ET at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, MS.

Mississippi State has beaten two top ten schools in a row, dominating LSU for almost the entire distance in Baton Rouge, then coming back in scoring a 17-point victory over Texas A&M. Such great work naturally merits a jump in the polls, considering all the upsets that took place last weekend. So MSU is now tied for third in the Associated Press rankings, along with in-state rival Ole Miss, and they are sixth in the coaches poll.

In the NCAA football odds that a been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, Auburn is laying a couple of points on the road:

Auburn Tigers -2
Mississippi State Bulldogs +2

Over 63.5 Points -110
Under 63.5 Points -110

Last year’s game between these two teams was a real thriller, and Auburn scored a touchdown with just eleven seconds left to snare the 24-20 victory. They did so despite turning the ball over three times, but what was interesting is that they did it for the most part through the air, with 339 passing yards, while Mississippi State held their rushing attack to only 120 yards on 36 carries.

Clearly, the key to beating the NCAA football odds as a home underdog in this one for the Bulldogs is to be very stingy against the run once again. Mississippi State has done its part so far, allowing just 2.8 yards per carry. But Auburn truly has a balanced offense; in the resounding 41-7 victory over LSU last week, they had 298 yards on the ground and 268 through the air. Obviously if Auburn keeps winning, quarterback Nick Marshall is going to gain more and more steam as a Heisman Trophy candidate.

But no doubt there are a considerable number of BetAnySports customers who are more enamored with the Heisman chances of Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott, who shows unusual command under center. Prescott has thrown for 13 touchdowns this season, with only two interceptions, and he has added 455 rushing yards. He has made his Heisman statement the right way – by coming up big against very good teams. Currently he leads the SEC in passing efficiency.
