Pro Football Odds – Falcons Seek Offensive Balance as Dogs Against Cardinals

While the St. Louis Cardinals are trying to win a World Series in America’s heartland (sort of), the team formerly known as the St. Louis Cardinals will be doing business in the desert on Sunday.

Arizona, at 3-4, does not count itself out of the playoff race by any stretch, even though it occupies the same division as the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. They will play host to the Atlanta Falcons, a team trying to get healthy and shake the label of “disappointment,” in a game slated to kick off at 4:25 PM ET at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ.

In the pro football odds that have been posted on this game at BetAnySports, the Cardinals are favored at home:

The Falcons haven’t really put a stop to many opponents, allowing more than 25 points per game. But this Cardinal crew seems to have a dysfunctional offense, no matter who is the coach or who is at the controls. Carson Palmer, the Heisman Trophy winner, was thought to be a significant upgrade form what the Cards had before at the position, but NFL bettors at BetAnySports have seen a lot of the “same old, same old.” Palmer has been intercepted 13 times and been sacked 20 times. His passes don’t go far (6.5 yards an attempt). And frankly, Larry Fitzgerald (32 catches) should be a bigger weapon than he is.

One encouraging sign is that Arizona should see Andre Ellington in the lineup this week, and he is one guy who has given some pop to this offensive effort, with 6.4 yards per carry and 20 catches.

But you know, with all the problems he has had to endure with his receivers, including a season-ending injury to Julio Jones and a bad ankle on the part of Roddy White, who is now out of the lineup, Matt Ryan has still completed 70% of his throws with a great ratio of 14 TD passes to four interceptions. Harry Douglas has proven to be a good third receiver, as he stood in there and caught seven passes for 149 yards last week against Tampa Bay, and Tony Gonzalez is having another good season (35 catches, 369 yards).

Now pro football bettors get the word that Steven Jackson, who’s been sitting out with a hamstring injury, has been going through full practices and is ready to chip in. He may bring a running game back to Falcons, as well as being a receiving threat out of the backfield, joining Jacquizz Rodgers in that respect. So Ryan has some weaponry to work with, making this a much more dependable attack than that which the Cards have.
