A lot of things haven’t worked for the New York Jets this season, and one of those things is the quarterback position. Although there are very few people who think they are going to remedy it, they are making a move that they hope can shake things up this week as they meet up with the Baltimore Ravens in a game that begins at 1 PM ET on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. Ryan Fitzpatrick had a terrific year for the Jets last season, throwing 31 touchdown passes and helping them become one of the best teams in the league in the red zone. But the next day that decision was reversed. Smith has failed in providing leadership when he was the starter, so it is hard to believe that his insertion into the lineup is going to create the “spark” that Bowles said he is looking for. But there was a general consensus that he was maturing during the 2015 training camp before his jaw was broken in the locker room, in an altercation with a teammate.
So we’ll see. One thing that cannot change is the absence of Eric Decker, the wide receiver who was Fitzpatrick’s favorite target when it came to red zone situations. The Jets are the worst in the league when it comes to converting red zone trips into touchdowns. The Ravens are not without their own offensive woes; head coach John Harbaugh had to make a move on his staff before last week’s game, as he dismissed Marc Trestman from his position as offensive coordinator, replacing him with Marty Mornhinweg, who is expected to take this team back to a more balanced offense.
The Ravens come back to MetLife Stadium for the second straight weekend, having lost to the Giants last week on a spectacular Eli Manning touchdown pass to Odell Beckham on a fourth down in the final minute.
