NFL Betting at Get That Bet — Cowboys Will See How Weeden Looks Against Chargers

Written By Charles Jay On Google Plus

The Dallas Cowboys have to get a few things rectified before the start of the 2014 football season, and one of those things is to get the backup quarterback fully indoctrinated into the offense. They are going to have a chance to do that on Thursday night when they visit the San Diego Chargers in NFL betting action that is scheduled to get underway at 10 PM ET at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

These teams are quarterbacked by two of the best in the business. The Cowboys, of course, have Tony Romo, who won’t be seeing any action on Thursday. Philip Rivers will play one series of downs for the Chargers.

In the NFL betting odds that have been posted at Get That Bet, the Chargers are the favorite sin this game:

Under 37.5 Points -110

The Cowboys have to shake the effects of an 8-8 season, which ended with Tony Romo out of action. He finished the 15th game of the year very gallantly, although he did so with a herniated disk in his back. But he missed the finale, when Kyle Orton had to take over. And then he had back surgery in December.

Orton was released in mid-July, and the Cowboys also bid farewell to wide receiver Miles Austin and defensive end DeMarcus Ware. They signed Brandon Weeden, who was the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns as a rookie and also for part of last season. Getting to the .500 mark may be a chore for the Cowboys, at least in the opinion of the oddsmakers at Get That Bet, who have priced them at -175 to end the regular season with less than eight wins.

The opinion on the part of some NFL bettors and football observers is the fact that Romo could be a fragile proposition and is a good bet to sit out at some point during the season. That would necessitate Weeden being ready. Since the team is sitting out Romo for this game, this becomes the opportunity for Weeden, who has thrown 23 TD passes and 26 interceptions in his two-year career.

Weeden is already 30 years old, owing to several years where he played minor league baseball before attending Oklahoma State to play football. It is this “maturity” that Jerry Jones likes when he talks about Weeden stepping in if need be. There’s certainly a point to be made there, so Get That Bet patrons will be watching closely to see how he handles things.

The Chargers (-145 to exceed eight wins in the NFL betting futures) hope to have a healthy Malcom Floyd from the beginning, although the offense that was led by head coach Mike McCoy and coordinator Ken Whisenhunt (since departed) adjusted enough for Rivers to have his best season in the NFL (32 TD’s, 11 INT’s). Frank Reich, the QB coach last year, moves up to the coordinator spot, and the Chargers, who made the playoffs and got to the divisional round, will use veteran Kellen Clemens after Rivers makes his brief appearance.
