Washington Redskins vs. Philadelphia Eagles – November 17 2013

This Sunday’s NFL lineup includes a big game from the NFC East with the Washington Redskins vs. Philadelphia Eagles. The Redskins are sitting at the bottom of the division, and they’ll need to win against divisional rivals if they are to have any hope of making the playoffs.

Washington Redskins Overview

There is good news for the Redskins, as they have a mostly healthy squad. Chris Thompson is out injured for the rest of the season and he’ll undergo shoulder surgery, but the 5th round rookie hadn’t yet made an impact in the team. The Eagles may be without two of their key defensive players. Safety Earl Wolff is reported as week to week with a knee injury picked up last weekend against the Green Bay Packers, and linebacker Mychael Kendricks is questionable as he also went out with a knee injury in the same game. If Kendricks doesn’t play on Sunday he will be missed, having been an important part of the Eagles defensive setup.

Philadelphia Eagles Overview

Philadelphia will probably be without veteran quarterback Michael Vick, also out with injury. If Vick is healthy for Sunday, he will likely remain on the bench as backup for QB Nick Foles, a role that Vick may have to get used to. Since taking over the number one spot from the injured Vick, Foles has been inspirational, and after throwing 10 touchdown passes in the past two weeks Washington’s poor pass defense (ranked 26th in the league) had better be wary.

Washington’s own quarterback is enjoying a stretch of good play and confidence despite losing to Minnesota last week. Robert Griffin III is throwing the ball well, and is a constant threat to run the ball. If Kendricks is out on Sunday, RG3 may be able to exploit that weakness. To have a chance against a potent Eagles offence, the Redskins will need to keep the ball away from that offence. Washington will try to keep ball possession by using running plays as much as they can and Griffin will need to be a threat when passing to keep Philly’s defense guessing.

Since their home opener, when The Philadelphia Eagles beat them 33-27, Washington’s season has been slipping away from them. This weekend is their chance to get revenge for that home opener loss, and to keep alive the hope for a post season. They won’t make it to the playoffs with a win on Sunday, but they won’t make it without one. The key to a win on Sunday, and to the rest of their season will be Washington’s defense doing its job.
