Perhaps there weren’t that many people who expected the Dallas Cowboys to have a 2-1 record at the moment, but they are they are, right in the thick of things in the NFC East. Dak Prescott has been impressive as a rookie starting quarterback, and he will take his act to the West Coast as the Cowboys take on the San Francisco 49ers in a game that is scheduled to begin at 4:25 PM ET on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. Prescott, as you probably know, had to take over at quarterback after Tony Romo got hurt. Perhaps he will concede that starting spot when Romo returns from his injury, but his job is to keep the Cowboys in the race until then. So far, so good. Prescott was impressive in the pre-season, so owner Jerry Jones was not so quick to pull the trigger on getting a veteran backup (he has since signed Mark Sanchez). But when you look at what Prescott has done, there is not a lot to complain about in the early going. He is averaging 7.7 yards per attempt, and in 99 passes, he has yet to throw an interception. And he finally got a lot of help last week from Ezekiel Elliott, who ran for 140 yards. Elliott, of course, is another rookie, drafted in the first round out of Ohio State, while Prescott was taken in the fourth round out of Mississippi State. They helped make the 31-17 victory over the Chicago Bears look easy.

But now for some of the bad news. Wide receiver Dez Bryant only lasted two offensive snaps last Sunday night, but had to leave the game with a knee injury. An MRI later revealed that he has a hairline fracture in his knee, and even though they are hopeful that he can take the field on Sunday, his latest status is “questionable.” Prescott has other outlets he can throw to, including Cole Beasley, who has snared 20 passes thus far, and old reliable tight end Jason Witten (14 receptions, 142 yards).

The 49ers started their schedule strong, shutting out the Los Angeles Rams 28-0, but they have been bounced a couple of times since. BetAnySports patrons may not want to put too much weight on the back-to-back 19-point losses to Carolina and Seattle, who, after all, are two of the NFC’s best teams. They are now returning home, where there is a slow track to begin with, and where the defense played better last season, allowing less than 17 points per game. This will be a new experience for the Cowboy rookies.

But head coach Chip Kelly cannot help but have some concern about his quarterback position. Blaine Gabbert had only 119 yards last week against the Seahawks, and he is only 55% accurate. That may have been very good in the late 1960s, but in this day and age, that is very poor. Colin Kaepernick, who was obviously a controversial figure, is looming in the background, and he has indicated that he if he gets the call, he will be more than ready. Perhaps the former starter fits in better with Kelly’s concept of offensive football, especially if he can still run with it.
