NFL Betting Odds – Rivers Can’t Have Excuses Against Luck, Colts

If you are an NFL bettor, you love those matchups where two of the game’s best quarterbacks go at it. Andrew Luck is going to certainly have one of those in next week’s game, but he’s got to show up for this one as well, as he will lead his Indianapolis Colts against Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers

Luck is a guy who is now well-known for leading comebacks; in fact, he’s done it nine times already in his 21-game career. With Rivers, the issue is not to turn the ball over. That is what gives his team the best chance to win.

Rivers tossed three interceptions to the Raiders, killing drives and sending this team down to defeat in what was a very winnable game. Of course, these are the kinds of games they are going to have to win if they are going to be considered a contender in what will be a very competitive race for a wild card spot (remember that Kansas City and Denver, who lead the AFC West, are both 6-0).

Some have pointed to the unusual starting time of last week’s game as something that threw the Chargers off. That game began at 11:35 PM ET, a necessity because the stadium staff at the O.co Coliseum in Oakland had to reconfigure the ballpark after a baseball playoff game between the A’s and the Detroit Tigers. Well, that excuse is a little thin – about as thin as any “look-ahead” excuse for the Colts (+1700 to win the Super Bowl at BetAnySports) might be right now. Or didn’t you know – next Sunday night the Colts play host to the Denver Broncos, in what will be Peyton Manning’s emotional return to Indianapolis.

It’s not just a matter of Andrew Luck (-150 to have more than 21.5 pass receptions at BetAnySports) throwing to Reggie Wayne anymore. Sure, Wayne is the team’s leading receiver, with 28 receptions, and he is Luck’s most reliable target. But the guy who is starting to emerge as a big play threat is T.Y. Hilton, the second-year speedster out of Florida International who is averaging 17 yards on his 20 catches, including a 73-yard touchdown against Seattle last Sunday. LaVon Brazill, who has been out of action due to a suspension, has been activated as well.

San Diego’s defense did not have a shining moment in last week’s game at Oakland. When a quarterback like Terrelle Pryor can pick you apart, with 13 of 18 and 141 yards and two TD’s in the first half, one can imagine what kind of problem they could conceivably have with Luck. And while Luck is not a true run threat like Pryor, NFL bettors know that does not mean he cannot move with the football. In fact, he’s got 133 rushing yards with two touchdowns, so the San Diego pass rush needs to worry about what is going to happen if Luck is flushed out of the pocket.
